President Yoon holds summit with Angolan President Lourenço

MOUs signed on trade, investment, health, and people-to-people exchanges

By Diplomacy Journal Lee Jon-young | President Yoon Suk-yeol held a summit with Angolan President João Lourenço to exchange views on ways to promote practical cooperation between the two countries and the regional and international situation on April 30.

The two leaders noted that friendly and cooperative ties have been steadily developing since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1992, and noted that recent high-level exchanges at all levels, including a phone call between the leaders last November, have further enhanced bilateral relations.

President Yoon expressed his appreciation to President Lourenco for actively promoting bilateral cooperation, citing South Korea as a key partner since he took office in 2017, while President Lourenco said that South Korea's successful development model and experience serve as an example for Angola.

The two leaders agreed that the Trade and Investment Promotion Framework (TIPF) Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed on the sidelines of the summit will take bilateral trade and investment to the next level, and called for expanding cooperation from the construction, shipbuilding, and fossil energy sectors to include renewable energy, health, customs administration, defense, and police cooperation.

The two leaders looked forward to further enhancing bilateral sectoral cooperation through the MOUs on health cooperation, police cooperation, and cooperation between diplomatic academies signed on the sidelines of the summit, while continuing to strengthen the development cooperation partnership to realize Angola's potential.

President Yoon expressed his appreciation to the Angolan government for its active cooperation in the implementation of Security Council sanctions against North Korea since he took office.

And the two leaders agreed on the need for the international community to continue to fully implement Security Council sanctions against North Korea and to work closely with the international community to achieve the denuclearization of North Korea. The two leaders also agreed to continue to work together to promote peace and security in the region.

President Yoon said that the Korea-Africa Summit, to be held on June 4-5, will serve as an opportunity to build a future-oriented partnership between Korea and Africa, as well as to further strengthen the Korea-Angola partnership.

President Lourenço welcomed South Korea's hosting of the summit and expressed his willingness to work together to make this historic event a success.

Following the summit, the two leaders attended the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between relevant ministries and agencies of the Korean and Angolan governments.
